6 easy ways to transport SUP boards

Transport SUP boards

6 easy ways to transport your board comfortably

The transport of inflatable SUP boards is much easier than that of hardboards. No wonder the inflatable models are also much more popular than the solid boards.

But without effort the transport still does not work – until now .

In this post, I’m presenting 6 variants that can help you to transport SUP boards.

1. transport straps

SUP trans straps or transport slings originally come from surfboards. Stand Up Paddling boards are just as suitable.

For the slings speaks the low weight and the small size of the loops. Curled up, they take almost no space away. The purchase price is also very low.

For longer walks, you can feel the load of the board already strong. In addition, the entire load is on just one shoulder and is therefore very one-sided.

See the best transport straps

2. SUP backpacks

SUP backpacks are one of the simplest and cheapest ways to carry a SUP board. From the boards, the air is released. Rolled up, they fit into the backpack.

With the weight of the backpack, the board and some accessories weighs around 10 to 15 kilograms. Thanks to adjustable shoulder straps, padding on the back and abdominal straps, the comfort is still guaranteed.

Often there are also loops for paddles or extra pockets for any accessories.

Some backpacks also have wheels so they can be pushed or pulled like a rolling suitcase.

3. SUP board trolleys

For longer distances the most convenient option is the transport by trolley. SUP board trolleys are no different from the models for kayaks and canoes.

With such a trolley, the effort is minimal. Once fixed, the board only has to be pushed.

In a separate amount I have already presented different trolleys for SUP boards.

4. SUP board bag

In boards, the boards are inflated stowed, stored and transported. The big advantage of the board pockets is that the boards do not have to be constantly inflated. Once inflated, you do not have to let the air out of the board before transport.

For SUP Board Transport, a board bag is pretty comfortable. All models have one (several) carrying handle (s). Some bags already have shoulder straps.

Depending on the SUP board you have to look for a suitable bag. In another article, I have already presented cool bags. Whether 320 cm Allround SUP, Touring or Race Board. Here you are sure to find:

Watch my favorite SUP board bags

5. Roof rack for SUP boards

Roof racks are the classic mounting option for Stand Up Paddling Boards on the car roof.

There are differences in attachment for SUP boards. However, a strap is often enough to secure a board to a roof rack.

See top inflatable roof racks *

6. Transport straps for the car roof

The minimalist solution for transport on the car roof are the transport and fixing straps for the car roof, which fasten the board directly to the car roof with a pad.

The advantages are apparent. The belts do not take up much space, are inexpensive to buy and can be used flexibly.

Without roof racks, the straps must pass through the car. This is not an option for longer trips. In the longer term, a fixed roof rack is the better option.

The best SUP trolleys presented

SUP trolleys

The best SUP cars and buggies

A SUP trolley is one of the most comfortable ways to transport a SUP board . The practical helper takes you almost completely from the work and is small and quite light.

During transport, such a trolley makes hardly noticeable, because the trolleys can be folded in a few simple steps. Often even the wheels can be removed.

as the trolleys are still called, are designed for high weights. The rule of thumb is: the higher the load, the bigger the tires.

For the weight of SUP boards even the most delicate models are completely sufficient. Oversized does not have to be a SUP trolley.

Practically, in any case, a support that leaves the trolley.

With the material I would bet on aluminum. SUP trolleys made of aluminum are stable, the material is very stable and it does not rust.

Pure SUP cars are rare. However, the trolleys for other water sports can of course also be used for stand up paddling boards. If you do not find what you are looking for in my list, you can look around for kayak cars, canoes or boat vans.

Serina trolley

  • Maximum load capacity: 70 kg
  • Dimensions: 68 x 32 x 8 cm
  • Dimensions folded: 60 x 34 x 34 cm
  • Material: aluminum

The SUP Trolley by Seria is actually made for kayaks and canoes. For SUP boards, the model is just as good.

The trolley is quickly assembled and can – if desired – disassemble for transport in a few simple steps.

The board is fixed with straps on the car and can then be pushed relaxed.

Duramaxx Sea Mule

  • Maximum payload: 60 kg
  • Tire diameter: 26mm
  • Tire pressure: max. 2 bar
  • Material: aluminum

Originally designed as a chariot for kayaks, canoes and boats, the Duramaxx Sea Mule also does an excellent job as a trolley for SUP boards.

On this small cart, the boards can be strapped and pushed to the water. Most of the smuggling is completely eliminated.

The Sea Mule Trolley can be cut like the other models with a few simple steps, making it space-saving for transport.

The ultimate SUP guide: Learn SUP in 5 minutes

SUP learning

SUP Instructions: Learn SUP in 5 minutes

divideTweet

So you want to learn SUP?

Unfortunately, that does not work in front of the screen. You have to get out on the water for that.

In this 5 minute SUP tutorial I want to explain you the basics of stand up paddling.

Equipped with the knowledge you can then venture on your own first SUP adventure.

Do not worry, SUP learning is really not hard.

For my article you need about 5 minutes reading time. On the water it takes 30 to 60 minutes until you have found your way.

At the latest from the second or third tour it will be really good.

But let’s get started right away. My lessons for you are:

  • SUP Instructions Step 1: The right equipment
  • SUP instructions Step 2: Into the water!
  • SUP instructions Step 3: The right footing
  • SUP instructions Step 4: The paddle technique

SUP Instructions: Step 1 – The right equipment

For the start you need the following equipment:

  1. SUP board
  2. SUP paddle
  3. SUP Leash
  4. Matching clothes
  5. (Lifejacket)

If you do a course for the first tour, you probably do not have to worry about it.

Otherwise, you can borrow a board and paddle. In all of Germany there SUP station that provide such services.

Or would you like to buy a SUP board ?

If so, I advise you to an all-round board that is at least 80 cm wide and 320 cm long. This category of boards offers a lot of stability and is versatile.

-> See my Allround SUP Board Reviews

If you already own SUP Board + Paddle

With your own SUP board and your own paddle you only have to worry about a leash and possibly a life jacket.

SUP Leash

Woman stands on sup board with sup leash on ankle

A leash is a tether attached to the board with one end attached to your ankle or the other end. If you fall into the water, your board will not float away so guaranteed.

A SUP Leash is one of the standard equipment for stand up paddling, because the boards can swim quite fast due to currents, wind and the initial pushing away when falling into the water.

-> See my favorite SUP leashs

Clothes for Stand Up Paddling

And which clothes are suitable?

  • In the summer bikini and swimming shorts are perfectly adequate. Just think of enough sunscreen with a high sun protection factor and possibly a headgear.
  • In spring and autumn, thin neoprene clothing such as a neoprene T-shirt or a long John isrecommended .
  • In winter, you should dress according to the onion principle to stay warm. Dry suits or wetsuits are recommended . Pay attention to warmed hands and feet.

-> Learn more about SUP apparel

(Lifejacket)

Other websites generally recommend lifejackets with SUP. However, I believe that if you are a practiced swimmer and looking for a start anyway a mirror-smooth lake the danger is relatively small.

But I do not want to take your decision. If you, as a SUP beginner, want to be alone on the water and are not sure about your swimming skills , you should probably order a life jacket like the Lalizas life jacket .

SUP Instructions: Step 2 – Get into the water!

The equipment is at the start, but how do you get into the water now?

First of all, the board needs to be prepared:

  1. Open the valve of the board
  2. Plug the pump into it (via screw cap)
  3. Pump up the board. The manufacturer recommends the recommended pressure on the website or in the operating instructions. In any case, this is in the range of 10 to 15 PSI.

For later: The supplied pumps are often not the yellow of the egg. A double stroke pump or an electric pump is well worth it in my opinion.

On the carrying handles, you can now carry the board into the water. Move the board a few meters from the shore until the water is deep down to the hips. Climb onto the board now and kneel down in the middle.

Stand facing out, take the paddle in both hands and paddle away from the shore.

SUP Instructions: Step 3 – The Right Stand

Now stand up slowly. It can help to put paddles across the board.

This will seem quite uncertain at first. In particular, therefore, it is recommended to start on an almost wave-free day (waves <20 cm). With some experience (1 or 2 tours), this initial insecurity flies away completely.

The stand at SUP is upright. The back should be straight.

Go down a little bit to better balance the waves of the water.

Now it can go on with the decisive last step …

SUP Instructions: Step 4 – The paddle technique

Above all, learning SUP means learning how to paddle .

For paddling, you must first take the right attitude. The SUP is hip-width with parallel feet on the board. Feet and body are directed forward.

The paddle is held with both hands. The hand of the paddle side is at the bottom of the shaft of the paddle, while the other hand includes the handle.

  • If you paddle right, the right hand is down on the shaft and the left hand on the grip.
  • If you paddle left, your left hand is down on the shaft and your right hand is on the grip.

The upper arm is the pressure arm. This one does the most work. The arm on the shaft of the paddle is called a draft arm. Ideally, this arm only guides the barrel of the paddle. But the power comes from the upper arm.

Dive with the paddle as far forward as possible and pull the paddle at most to the height of your feet. This is how you get ahead the fastest.

Use not only the strength of your arms for paddling but also your upper body.

As you can see in the picture, the pressure arm is almost stretched. Right at the beginning this is not so easy to implement. Try to remember it during the first tours.

In which direction does the paddle show?

Choosing the right side of the paddle sheet is a bit unintuitive.

Paddle blades are often tilted. When paddle, the sloping side of you must point away. The paddle should not be a shovel that will allow you to get a lot of water, but a tool that will help you move forward effectively.

So, the 5 minutes are over.

I hope you have learned something about SUP and hope you enjoy your first SUP adventure!

SUP seat: relaxing in the middle of the lake

SUP seat

The best SUP seats in comparison

Anyone who has done Stand Up Paddling before will know that you are definitely not just standing there.

The constant balancing and the easy posture in the knees quickly becomes very exhausting. If you need a break, it usually does not look good. In the middle of the water, the next resting place is still far away.

Would not it be practical to have a SUP seat mounted on the board?

If it gets too tiring, you can sit down and relax for a while.

The only condition for a SUP seat are preinstalled D-rings . At this the seat is moored.

If your board does not have D-rings or are mounted in inappropriate places, you can attach the D-rings afterwards as well .If you are a passionate angler or a stand up paddler and you want to get to know the mix of fishing and SUP, you should definitely take a look at my guide to SUP Fishing .

Pellor seat with bag

  • fits on every SUP board
  • Material: Nylon + EVA
  • Faatures: removable bag

The Stand Up Paddling Board seat by Pellor convinces with its quality. Nylon seems to be a good material for this SUP accessory.

The Pellor seat is not conspicuous. Instead of relying on a striking design that is often no longer recognizable on the water, this seat was designed above all for ergonomics and functionality.

The combination of ribs in the center of the seat and the nubs on the edge ensures optimum grip.

The board is attached with a total of four 2-point straps. The very good attachment to the SUP board ensures a certain stability.

The straps are each adjustable, so you can customize them to your board. A nice addition is the detachable bag at the back of the seat.

Conclusion: The seat of Pellor is my favorite. The design is simple, but the seat gives grip. Due to the length-adjustable straps, the seat can be attached to almost any board.

Aqua Marina SUP seat

  • suitable for every SUP
  • 600 D polyester (1 cm thick)
  • Features: storage net on the back

Aqua Marina has already made a name for itself in the SUP community with its own SUP boards and a whole range of accessories. The company’s products are not only regularly among the best-selling models, but score especially in the quality category for cheap money.

Also, the headquarters of Aqua Marina convinced in the point price-performance.

The four straps are adjustable in length. Thus, the Aqua Marina seat on almost every SUP board, which is equipped with appropriate eyelets (D-rings), can be used.

In addition, this seat offers a storage net on the back. This network offers snacks, drinks and sunscreen. However, the network is not watertight.

Conclusion: The headquarters of Aqua Marina is very solid and my favorite in the point price-performance.

F2 SUP seat

  • four adjustable straps
  • specially made for water sports
  • fits on all SUP boards

An alternative is the SUP seat from F2. The minimalist models still have a padding.

Conclusion

I do not want to deny that SUP is a wonderful fitness training, but if you need a break, there is often no suitable location nearby.

A short paddle break on a lake does not hurt, but relaxes not so well. The constant cushioning of the waves continues to stress the thigh muscles. Proper relaxation is hardly possible.

A SUP seat – like the one presented – is very handy. And if you’re an SUP angler, a solid fit is indispensable anyway.

Kayak meets SUP: The best SUP boards compared with seat

SUP boards with seat

Kayak meets SUP

The fans of Stand Up Paddling come from different camps. Many fans of kayaking and canoeing are also present.

If you choose a SUP board with a seat, it almost comes to the feeling of an inflatable kayak. A trend that – just like SUP – has come up in recent years.

With the seat you can bring in a lot of variation in your trips. Either you go on a normal SUP tour, work your SUP to kayak or mount the seat and relax in the middle of the lake.

SUP boards with seats are doing quite well. I hear this from many sides. Also you can see correspondingly equipped SUP boards more and more often. Another sign of this trend is the large number of manufacturers selling their boards in packages with such a kayak seat.

If your board does not have a seat, you can easily retrofit it.

In my article about SUP seats I already compared the most popular models.

Everything your board needs to mount a SUP seat is matched by mounting options. Usually SUPs already have D-rings (special eyes in the form of a „D“).

If these are missing, I’ll tell you which SUP board D-rings you should buy and how to attach the D-rings .

If you are already looking for a SUP board with a seat, you should take a look at the Aqua Marina Evolution . This watercraft combines elements of SUP boards and kayaks. The Evolution is basically an inflatable two person kayak. With a few simple steps, the outer swimming ring can be detached. What’s left is a normal SUP (for one person).

Here you can see the mixture of kayak and SUP *

Bluefin 330 cm Allround / Touring SUP Board with seat

  • Brand: Bluefin
  • for beginners / advanced
  • Length: 325 to 457 cm
  • Weight 15 to 19 kilograms
  • Paddler weight: up to 180 kg
  • Accessories: high-pressure pump, backpack, paddle, kayak seat, leash, repair kit

The Bluefin Cruise Allround board with seat is my favorite. If you are looking for a SUP with a seat, this is just the model.

You get the usual Bluefin quality, pay much less than the premium brands and have a kayak seat which – thanks to the many D-rings – perfectly mounted on the board.

For kayak mode , the included paddle course has a paddle blade on both sides. For Stand Up Paddling the second paddle sheet can then be removed again.

The set is available in different lengths 330 cm, 365 cm and 457 cm. I advise beginners to the shortest length. Then the board has the typical and proven combination of length and width of an all-round board (330 cm x 77 cm).

The board is not very wide, which makes it quite fast. In particular, when sitting your body of gravity is namely flat and the more tilting stability by a wider board brings you no great advantage.

Advanced users should resort to the 365 cm version. This format makes the board a touring board. Especially for longer tours such elongated shaped boards are great.

The board always scores top marks in terms of customer satisfaction. As can be seen from the many positive customer reviews * , the buyers of the Bluefin Cruise seem to be really excited. Especially in terms of price, the board stands out positively.

Bestway Hydro-Force Oceana 305x84x12 cm with seat

  • Brand: Bestway
  • for beginners
  • Length: 305 cm
  • Weight 11.2 kilograms
  • Paddler weight: Up to 110 kg
  • Accessories: paddle, coil leash, carrying bag, pump, repair kit, seat

The Hydra-Force Oeana by Bestway is another top SUP board that now comes standard with a seat.

The seat of the SUP by Bestway is clamped on two front D-rings and offers you a stable and relaxed seating.

Similar to the Bluefin model, the paddle in kayak mode has paddle blades on both sides or just a paddle blade if you want stand up paddling.

Conclusion: The Bestway is one of the best ways to get a SUP board based on value for money. If you want to get into Stand Up Paddling and kayak, the Bestway Oceana is your model.

Bestway WaveEdge with kayak seat

  • Brand: Bestway
  • for beginners
  • Length: 310 cm
  • Weight 12 kg
  • Paddler weight: Up to 100 kilograms
  • Accessories: kayak seat, aluminum paddle, pump, repair kit, carrying bag

The WaveEdge was released in 2013 and yet a kayak seat has been added.

The special feature of the Bestway SUP boards (as well as the WaveEdge board) is the footrest in the front area.

In Stand Up Paddling this is hardly noticeable. When kayaking while sitting, however, it serves wonderfully as a foot rest and, in order to draw additional power while paddling.

The board is similar to other Bestway models.

It is very narrow compared to today’s standard. For this reason, it is especially suitable for light paddlers and paddlers.

Blueborn Traveler 305 cm SUP Board with kayak seat

  • Brand: Blueborn
  • Length: 305 cm
  • Width: 77 cm
  • Maximum load:
  • Accessories: repair kit, fin, air pump, paddle, seat, carrying bag, footrest

Blueborn has a lot of experience in producing paddles and often received good reviews in these areas.

The SUP Board Blueborn Traveler comes with a matching kayak seat for use as a kayak, which can be attached to the D-rings placed around the board. Also, a footrest can be attached in the front area.

Irritating, I find that the included paddle is just a normal SUP paddle with a paddle blade. For kayak, this form of paddle will be hard to use. The supplied paddle is at least height adjustable, so you at least come forward like in a canoe.

For a multiple use, you will not come here to buy a real two-sided kayak paddle * .

Bestway Highwave SUP

  • Brand: Bestway
  • Length: 285 cm
  • Width: 76 cm
  • Maximum additional weight: 75 kg
  • Accessories: backpack, double-sided paddle, double-stroke pump and repair kit

The highwave is the right option for kids and very light paddlers. With a maximum load of only 75 kilograms (according to the manufacturer) is not much on the only 285 cm long SUP Board up.

In the Bestway style, the kayak seat is fixed to two front D-rings, so you can relax leaning into the seat. With the footrest in the front area, you can paddle powerfully in kayak mode.

In proportion to the length of the board is quite wide, so it offers a lot of stability, which is good for beginners.

Furthermore, the accessories are quite handy. The double-stroke pump speeds up the inflation of the board and the backpack makes transport easier.

Conclusion: The Highwave is a great choice for kids and light paddlers and paddlers.

The best small anchors for kayaks, SUP and small boats

Small anchors for SUP and Kayak

The best anchor for small boats, SUP and Kayak

SUP is a great workout, but every now and then you just need some relaxation.

Just lay on the board, close your eyes and enjoy the moment, snack on the food you bring or type a few messages on your mobile phone?

If there is no rest area in sight, that will not work.

How do you want to rest when the currents drive you back for miles?

The solution is of course an anchor.

Anchors for kayaks or SUP are significantly smaller and lighter than for large boats. Most models weigh less than 1.5 kilograms. That’s what makes them so heavy that your board or kayak will not run, but again so light that you can carry the small anchors comfortably.

For normal stand up paddlers and kayakers, the corresponding small anchors are a nice extra, which can make tours much more relaxed. If you practice Kayak Fishing, SUP Fishing or SUP Yoga, you will not be able to avoid buying such an anchor. The anchor is standard equipment for these disciplines.

After all, if you’re doing your yoga practice or the fishing route is thrown out, you do not want to always paddle.

In the following I propose my favorites for the personal title of the best small anchor for kayak, SUP boards and small boats .

If you want to know more about SUP accessories, I recommend you to look at my articles on SUP cabinets and SUP paddles .

BeGrit 1.5 kg folding anchor

  • Weight: 1500 grams
  • Rope length: 10 meters

The folding anchor from BeGrit is the heaviest anchor in my comparison. What initially sounds like a disadvantage, the BeGrit Faltanker but can easily compensate.

For one, the rope is the longest at this anchor. In many canals, rivers and near the shores of larger inland waters, 5 meters are enough. With the BeGrit model, you can be twice as sure that your anchor reaches the ground.

On the other hand, it is a folding anchor. If this is not needed, the anchor can be folded and stowed extremely space-saving. When folded, the anchor only measures 31 x 8 x 8 cm.

Conclusion: Technically, this anchor is a real highlight and can be used with 10 meters of rope length in the vast majority of anchorages. This anchor is my recommendation for anyone who just wants to be safe or just appreciate cool gadgets.

Airhead SUP anchor kit a015

  • Weight: 750 grams
  • Rope length: 4.5 meters

The SUP anchor kit is the best option in my opinion if you are looking for a small anchor for kayaks or SUP boards.

The anchor weighs only about 750g and is hardly noticeable while driving. The kayak and boats can easily be stowed below deck. Stand up paddlers can attach the anchor in a drybag.

Once ejected, the Airhead Anchor holds your vessel in place. Now you can fish, do yoga exercises or just relax.

Customer Reviews : Airhead is from the United States. Many reviews are therefore in English.

On Amazon, these customer reviews are very positive ( here it goes to the reviews * ). Kayakers and Stand Up paddlers are mostly positive. This SUP anchor really does!

Conclusion: I recommend the Airhead everyone, who reaches a 5 meter long anchor rope. If you travel by kayak, SUP or in a small boat and want to anchor mostly near the shore or in shallow water, the Airhead is your right choice.

Aqua Marina anchor set

  • Weight: 700 grams
  • Rope length: 8 meters

Aqua Marina is one of the largest manufacturers of SUP boards and SUP accessories. Accordingly, a wealth of experience in the development of new products can be used.

The anchor with nylon rope weighs only 8 grams in length, 700 grams. The weight is saved mainly by the light rope. With only 8 mm diameter and the selected material (nylon) this is very light.

Due to the weight, the anchor holds small boats or SUP boards firmly on the ground.

Furthermore, the anchor is galvanized and thus protected against corrosion.

View on Amazon *

Boatworld SUP and Kayak Faltanker

  • Weight: 700 grams
  • Rope length: 7.6 meters

Boatworld has a red lacquered folding anchor on offer, which can be conveniently fastened to virtually any watercraft thanks to the snap hook.

After use, the anchor can be folded up. Space saving, the anchor Boatworld can then easier to transport and store.

Furthermore, the Boatworld anchor has a float. I find such floats on Stand Up Paddling Boards rather annoying because I simply tie my anchor to a D-ring, but this is certainly a matter of taste.

A big advantage, however, is that the anchor can not sink through the float if the attachment should come loose.

Anchors and the little Boye can be stowed in the included bag for transport.

Conclusion: The anchor of Boardworld is a very solid model. Whether you need the Boye for kayaking or stand up paddling depends on you. From the weight and the rope length, this anchor is exactly in the middle between the previously recommended models. The folding function of the anchor is certainly very practical.

Talamex folding anchor

  • Weight: 1500 grams
  • Rope length: – (no rope included = ‚)

Talamex offers a DIY offer. The company’s folding anchor does not contain a rope. The smallest version of the anchor suitable for SUPs, kayaks and small boats weighs 1.5 kilograms.

Thus alone weighs the anchor more than the previously presented models. However, this anchor can be well transported, at least in the volume dimension, because the Talamex anchor is a folding anchor.

Furthermore, the galvanized anchor is protected against corrosion.

Conclusion: The offer is always solid. Price can be saved with this anchor also really. A matching anchor rope is already available for little money. I recommend this anchor line * . If you take the costs and the time for the knotting together, you may even get away cheaper here than with the top models.

SUP lifejacket duty: New rules obligate Swiss paddlers

SUP life jackets duty

New SUP laws take Swiss paddlers in the duty

divideTweet

SUP is perceived by many only as a leisure and bathing fun. At several points I have already hinted that life jackets really recommend.

Especially if

  • You are not an active swimmer
  • the water temperatures are low

You should definitely wear a life jacket at SUP .

If you are unsure which model is right for you, I recommend you to look at my guide to SUP lifejackets .

A leash is not required. I strongly advise to do so. If you fall into the water, it is not so easy to catch up with the wind and current. The tether is attached to your ankle and board, so the board can not swim away.

For whitewater tours or other flowing waters, the leash is only partially suitable, because there is a risk of entanglement in underwater plants or in the environment.

Are you still looking for the right leash? Then I advise you to my big SUP Leash comparison . There I present top models and explain what you had to look out for at leashs

SUP laws in Switzerland

In addition to this recommendation, since 2011 Stand Up Paddlers in Switzerland have already been taken into account.

As the leaflet of the vks (Association of Shipping Offices ) shows, stand up paddlers have to carry a life jacket on the many beautiful SUP spots in Switzerland if they move more than 300 meters from the shore.

Meanwhile, there are already first reports of paddlers who had to pay a penalty for paddling on Lake Zurich for lack of life jacket.

The vest must provide at least 50 Newton buoyancy. And in darkness or poor visibility, the board must be made visible by „white all-round light“.

Furthermore, a label of the owner of Stand Up Paddling boards is mandatory. Owners or owners of a board must note their name and a postal address clearly legible on the board.

Recommended for this is a waterproof pen * .

The marking serves on the one hand the environmental protection. Masterless SUP boards can be assigned to an owner. Probably follows then a fine.

On the other hand, the labeling should also help with theft. In the case of accidents, the person involved in the accident could also be identified.

Conclusion

For Stand Up Paddler in Switzerland, there is already an obligation to carry a life jacket. Paddlers in Germany and Austria are still free to wear one or not.

My guess is that if you’re unsure about your swimming skills or you’re planning something more dangerous (fast currents / whitewater SUP), you should definitely wear a life jacket.

In the other cases, the decision depends on you.

SUP life jackets: The best SUP lifejackets in comparison

SUP life jackets

The best SUP lifejackets in comparison

A SUP life jacket is already mandatory in Switzerland , whether it comes in Germany and Austria, I do not know yet.

Let me still explain in this article, when and why a life jacket for SUP makes sense. Later I’ll show you what to look for when choosing a SUP lifejacket, introduce good models and compare them with each other.

Children and teenagers traveling alone should always wear a life jacket. Even experienced swimmers eventually reach their limits at long distances. In the swimming pool the edge is seldom more than 10 meters away.

On a SUP tour, there are often hundreds of meters to the shore, with waves and current, which make the progress difficult, it is quickly exhausting.

Especially with cool water this is not to be protected.

I advise adults to a SUP life jacket (PFD ~ p ersonal f loating d evice in English called).

There is no special SUP vest. The range of lifejackets for canoeists, rowers, sailors and kite surfers, however, is huge. Of course, these models are just as suitable for the requirements of Stand Up Paddling.

With the help of the following criteria you can find a suitable life jacket.

  • Buoyancy: From 100 Newton buoyancy one speaks of life jackets. If the life jacket is used as a rescue device 100 N should be the minimum. As a pure buoyancy aid as the SUP, you can, however, the rule of thumb „8 Newton per 10 kilograms of body weight“ hold. Below, I have inserted a table with the values.
  • Cut: The vest should provide enough freedom of movement. The area around the arms and shoulders is especially important.
  • A few loops: strings and straps that hang around disturb me personally when paddling. Ideally, the cords are all festmachbar or run on the inside.
  • Weight: Too much weight interferes with paddling. In my opinion, the West should weigh no more than 1 to 1.5 kilograms.
  • Extras: Some models offer side pockets.

The short answer: The best life jacket for SUP

For adults

  1. Jobe neoprene life jacket
  2. Chaobite life jacket
  3. Secumar Swim-Aid Jump

For children and adolescents

  1. Mesle lifejacket Sportsman Junior
  2. Jobe Progress neoprene vest for kids

The alternative: Resttube Classic

If you are interested in this post, you will surely find my posts on waterproof bumbags for swimming and SUP or SUP boards for kids exciting.

Alternative: Resttube Classic – The self-inflating floating island

  • Weight: 300 grams
  • Buoyancy: 7 newtons

The resttube I have taken as an alternative to lifejackets. It does not replace them in any case. In particular, children and adolescents should wear a proper SUP life jacket.

The Resttube Classic will be worn as a belt pouch. You can inflate the floating island before take off. The peculiarity, however, is the self-inflating function. By means of a CO2 cartridge, the island is completely filled in a few moments and provides buoyancy.

Conclusion:  An exciting gadget that has quite a lot of positive reviews accumulated. Annoying, I find the nachkaufenden cartridges. For the serious case definitely a great part that you’ll like to buckle up.

Jobe SUP Neoprene life jacket for adults

  • Weight: 1100 to 1700 grams (depending on size)
  • Buoyancy: 50 Newton

The vest is good. Thanks to the zipper at the front, donning is easy.

A big advantage of the Jobe life jacket are the many different variants. This life jacket is available in sizes from S to XXXL + in the colors black, red, blue and yellow.

Conclusion:  The neoprene life jacket by Jobe is a high-quality vest, which is perfectly suited for stand up paddling thanks to the large cutouts around the shoulders. The model is designed for men, but looks quite neutral. For women, Jobe has made extra those vests *that are a little shorter and slimmer.

Chaobite life jacket for adults

  • Weight: 522 grams
  • Buoyancy: 75 Newton

With this savings model, you certainly do not do anything wrong. For very little money, there is a life jacket, which with 7.5 kilograms (~ 75 Newton) provides enough lift for up to 90 kilograms heavy paddlers.

The weight of wet clothing should not be neglected, but you still get here a SUP life jacket for adults for a true offer price.

Conclusion:  With personally the Chaobite life jacket has too many straps. I just like it simple as with the models of Jobe. You can not complain about the price. To save the Chaobite is great, fashionable but not my taste.

SECUMAR buoyancy aid Jump

  • Weight: 480 to 560 grams
  • Buoyancy: 50 Newton

The gray buoyancy aid Jump from Secumar offers 50 N buoyancy. The Jump life jacket is not only a simple vest, but also has a small side pocket that can be opened by zipper.

Attention at this point: The bag is not waterproof. Phones and car keys should also be stowed in a waterproof case.

The vest is closed by a Velcro on the side. The whole vest works apart. The vest can be put on and taken off just as easily.

Other buyers have already reported on their experiences on Amazon. The tenor was also very positive.

Conclusion:  The vest by Secumar has a fair price. She is a bit overblown with her personally. The side pocket is certainly a handy feature if you want to reduce the number of pieces of luggage on the SUP or just take an energy bar anyway.

Mesle life jacket Sportman Junior

  • Buoyancy: 50 Newton

The Mesle life jacket is quite flexible adjustable. It is suitable for a chest circumference between 64 and 74 cm.

The vest is open at the sides, so paddling with SUP, kayaking or canoeing is easy.

The triple fuse ensures that the life jacket is firmly in the water.

Conclusion:  Mesle has in addition to the many models for adults and SUP life jackets for children on offer. This model provides plenty of buoyancy, so you can enjoy the water fun with the little ones, without worrying too much about safety.

Jobe Progress neoprene vest for kids

  • Weight: 1000 grams
  • Buoyancy: 50 Newton

The Progress life jacket is available in four child sizes S / M, L-XL, XXL and XXL. You can choose between the colors red, blue, pink and black.

The closure is the same as my personal favorite among the adult model. The central zipper at the front and the double security ensure a firm sitting of the vest. At the same time, the vest can be put on and taken off quickly.

Conclusion:  The Jobe children’s vest Progress is a great choice for the little ones. With the four different sizes you will surely find a suitable model.

How many Newtons buoyancy does a life jacket need for my body weight?

Based on the rule of thumb of 8 Newton per 10 kilograms, you can estimate the required buoyancy of your SUP lifejacket.

With the formula you get to the values:

Table: Recommended lift depending on body weight *

Body weight in kilogramsBuoyancy in Newton
30 kg24 N
35 kg28 N
40 kg32 N
45 kg36 N
50 kg40 N
55 kg44 N
60 kg48 N
65 kg52 N
70 kg56 N
75 kg60 N
80 kg64 N
85 kg68 N
90 kg72 N
95 kg76 N
100 kg80 N
105 kg84 N
110 kg88 N

* For rafting or very turbulent waters, you need a model that provides more lift.

Practical test: After the order

On the first tour with your new life jacket, you should thoroughly test it. Jump into the water a couple of times, climb back on board and get familiar with the wet life jacket. If you get into trouble, you will not panic.

Safety thanks to SUP Leash?

SUP leashs also provide security. The leash is a tether attached to one end of your ankle and the other end to the SUP. When falling into the water the board does not drive away like that.

On lakes, canals and calm waters, I strongly advise a leash. The leash is now standard equipment for Stand Up Paddlers.

Beware of running waters, white water rafting and waters with many obstacles and underwater plants.

Although the leashs are rolled and do not expand until they fall (it is called „coiled leashs“), there is still a small danger of getting caught in something.

The best SUP fins for US boxes and plug systems

SUP fins

Guide: Find the right SUP Finn

Buy the right SUP Finn

Finns are the subject of endless articles in magazines, in the SEA as well as in the surf sector, side-by-side forum discussions and hotly debated Youtube videos. Opinions differ as well as the results of SUP Finn tests.

Optimizing around SUP Finns is not just something for professionals who want to tickle out a few thousandths. Normal stand up paddlers can get a lot out of their SUP with the right SUP fin.

The fin does not fundamentally change the driving characteristics of a board. A short Wave SUP will never be a touring board. The fin will rather polish your SUP and improve the characteristics that are important to you.

In my article I will teach you the most important knowledge about the Finns, introduce perfectly matched SUP fins and show you how to attach your SUP fin.

While several Finns are frequently seen on surfboards, SUP boards usually have only one central fin.

First, some key facts about SUP Finns:

  • Fin position: The further up the Finn is placed, the more revving your SUP board is.
  • Surface of the fin:  The larger the fin surface, the more grip and driving stability the fin offers. Negative is the low acceleration of the board and the poorer rotation. Tour paddlers and heavier paddlers should rather resort to a big fin. Race Finns are the best choice here. Light stand up paddlers and those who incorporate many twists and turns should prefer to resort to small areas.
  • Thickness of the Finn:  Thick Finns make you slower than thin Finns. However, thin ones are less robust. Of course, the SUP Finns should not break and sometimes can put off the collision with obstacles. Ultimately, it’s a material issue. More on that later.
  • Length of the fin:  A large fin surface improves straight-line stability. However, a large fin also provides frictional resistance and therefore slows you down. Small Finns achieve the highest speeds in theory, but are wobbly in straight-line running. Here a compromise must be found.

Later I will go into more detail about the shapes and material of the Finns.

The different SUP fin systems

With Stand Up Paddling Board, two systems have prevailed. The US box comes from surfing and is one system. On the other hand, there is the mating system on inflatable boards.

The best SUP Finns US Box System

The US box fins are very numerous. This fin system has existed for a long time and accordingly there are already many good Finns on offer.

Mistral Soft SUP Fin for US-Box

  • Fin system: US box

The Mistral Finn for US boxes is the ideal alternative to the first standard fin, which is often top of the board purchase. The Mistral has three main advantages:

  1. The Finn is soft and flexible. For stones or other obstacles in the water, it does not break immediately.
  2. Due to the curvature little seagrass gets caught in the fin.
  3. The tip is soft, this reduces the risk of injury.

The fin in dolphin shape is also the ideal all-rounder. Suitable for just about anything that is not exactly a SUP race at full speed or a racy white water rafting, most Stand Up paddlers have become friends with this design.

Mistral is one of the premium brands in the SUP segment. The quality and, for example, the customer support is correspondingly good. After all, you do not have to pay more for this Finn than for other models.

Conclusion:  The offer of Mistral deserves my unqualified recommendation. For a very fair price Mistral offers the ideal substitute fin, if your old one is broken or lost. The soft construction defies obstacles – from this Finn you have something longer.

ColdRiver SUP Finn US Box Size L Fin for iSUP and Hardboard

  • Fin system: US box

With the SUP Fin, ColdRiver is making a solid model for US boxes. The SUP fin is suitable for inflatable SUPs and hardboards.

The dolphin construction has now established itself as the industry standard. Finns like Mistral’s ColdRiver or SUP Finn can be put to practical use across many applications.

Leisure, touring, training or SUP Yoga – with ColdRiver you are not doing anything wrong.

Conclusion: The ColdRiver is my savings tip when it comes to Finns for the popular US Box Standard. It serves as a great replacement for your old Finn. If you already had a similarly shaped fin before, the ColdRiver hardly changes the driving characteristics.

saruSURF US Box SUP Fin

  • Fin system: US box

This race fin from saruSURF is a real speed upgrade for your SUP. The so-called sword design is an alignment to the straight ahead without compromise.

The high speed and the very stable straight-ahead driving comes at the expense of the revving of your SUPs. But for tours or if you just want to be really fast on the road, this should not play a big role.

There is a little hint for the twists. If you shift your weight backwards, you can use the sword fin to spin around your own axis much more efficiently.

Conclusion:  This US box fin is a real appreciation when it comes to the speed. When driving straight, the Sword Finns are really good.

Mistral SUP Finn Honeycomb US Box

  • Fin system: US box

Honeycomb could be the future of the Finns. The honeycomb structures of the fin allow manufacturers to save a lot of weight.

The clever construction, based on beehive architecture, does not lose its stability.

In this way, lightweight and stable SUP fins can be built that are still so flexible that they will not break at the first obstacle.

Conclusion:  Whether future technology or not the Mistral Honeyomb SUP fin is a light, sleek and stable sword fin, with the proper speeds can be achieved. However, you participate in the development of the new technology by a relatively high purchase price.

The best SUP Finns for plug-in systems

The connector systems for Finns are a little less common.

The systems of well-known brands are compatible with each other. Naish fins on Nash boards but also on the boards of Aqua Marina, Fanatic, Red Paddle, BIC, JP Australia and co.

Unfortunately, plug-in fins are not always compatible with no-name fins.

Naish iSUP fin for plug-in system

  • Fin system: plug-in system

Naish’s fin is compatible with the plug-in systems of all popular manufacturers: Naish, Bluefin, Red Paddle, JP Australia, BIC, Fanatic and Aqua Marina.

The fin in sword form improves in particular the straight line. With this model you will also achieve higher speeds. Fast turns are made more difficult by the elongated shape.

Conclusion:  If you come from a crescent-shaped fin (dolphin shape), this Finn of Naish is certainly exciting for you. Especially for tours, the sword fins are very popular. Although the Finn is from Naish, she is priced in midfield.

Aqua Marina Dagger SUP Finn for plug-in system

  • Fin system: plug-in system

The Aqua Marina Dagger Finn is a classic dolphin fin. This design is the all-rounder among the Finns. The dolphin fins are suitable for longer straight-ahead as well as curvy channels.

At 11 inches (28 cm), the Finn is very long, which especially increases the speed when driving straight ahead. In terms of maximum speed on straight stretches, this dolphin fin does not come close to sword fins.

Aqua Marina’s model is compatible with most other connector systems of well-known manufacturers.

Conclusion: Aqua Marina offers this SUP finely priced for its own and correspondingly compatible plug-in systems. The dolphin fin is a compromise between maneuverability and speed. However, the model of Aqua Marina is very long, so that the focus here is more on straight driving and a high top speed.

View on Amazon *

Mistral SUP Finn for plug-in system

  • Fin system: plug-in system

According to the manufacturer, this fin is compatible with all standard connector systems of all manufacturers.

The design of the Finn of Mistral looks like a mixture of the models of Aqua Marina and Naish. As a half-dolphin and half-sword fin, the Mistral SUP fin mixes tipping stability and the speed of the straight sword fins with the agility of the dolphin fins.

The fin is a bit shorter (24.5 cm) than the aqua marina fin (28 cm).

After all, you will hardly notice a difference between this hybrid and a pure dolphin when driving.

Conclusion: Mistral has a special design on offer. For plug systems, the company offers a mixture of sword and dolphin fin for a fair price. It is an alternative to the classic all-round fin in dolphin form, which differs only slightly from the driving experience.

The best SUP Finns for Race Boards

Race board Finns are small and have a low draft. This means they offer little water resistance are accordingly fast, but also little tipping stability. Turns work really well with these Finns.

Siren Race SUP Fin

  • Length: 30 cm
  • Thickness: 0.6 cm
  • Draft: 21.4 cm
  • Weight: 248 g
  • Fin system: US box

Want to make your race or touring board even faster? Then the SUP Race Finn from the German company Siren SUPsurfing is the best choice.

The thin fin and sleek design reduce water resistance so you can reach even higher speeds.

The fin system is the US box. At least 20.5 cm, your US box must be long. But with almost all SUP boards with US box fits the Siren Finn.

The relatively thin fin is robust and flexible thanks to a construction made of the materials nylon and plastic.

Especially handy I find the vault back, because so caught no underwater plants in the fin.

Conclusion: The Siren Finn is a top choice if you want to get even more out of your high-speed boards at SUP competitions or just want to beat your own record time on the next tour.

MFC Sprint – SUP Fin Race

  • Brand: MauiFinCompany
  • Length: 10.16 cm / 12.7 cm
  • Weight: 120g / 135g

If you are happy to be convinced by results, you will be satisfied with Finn quickly. Kai Lenny won at the 2013 SUP Race World Championship. And he used the MFC Sprint Finn .

This model is even lighter than any previously introduced fins. With only 120 g (or 135 g) in the 4-inch (5-inch) variant, the weight is halved again to the Siren SUP fin.

The small size is somewhat at the expense of tipping stability. Experienced Stand Up paddlers can compensate for this with their skills. Beginners are with this Finn probably more often in the water.

Alternatively, the fin is also available in yellow as a 10.16 cm long version * .

Conclusion: Maybe you can not make it to the world record with this Finn. You can be fast anyway. And with the MFC Race Fin you are well equipped for it.

Common SUP fin shapes in the overview

The molds are an important element of fin construction. The different construction methods are surprisingly far apart. Sword-like Finns are available as well as hump-shaped middle fins or curved fins.

The shape is by far not just an optical detail. The different shapes are the result of complex simulations designed to improve driving characteristics. Due to the many factors in the calculations, deviant variables (like another subject) can cause dramatically different results in SUP Finn tests.

In the following table I present common construction methods and roughly describe the corresponding properties. I also always linked an example.

SUP fin shapes

Aqua Marina 22.9 cm large central fin
dolphin:The curved dolphin is the standard form for SUP fins. Most Finns are shaped this way. In essence, the shape is a great compromise. The medium-sized surface and watershed edge ensure neat speed and good straight-line stability.Seagrass and other plants are hardly attached to the fin due to the curvature towards the stern. The dolphin is a great all-round shape, deservedly the most common model.

FCS II SUP Touring Fin SUP US Box Fin
Wing:This fin shape is typical for touring boards. In straight-line running these Finns are hard to beat. The longer edge, however, slows you down slightly. Equipped with this fin, your board is perfect for shallow water. Rivers can not be traveled so well with the Wing Finn.If you want to equip a touring board with a fin, the Wing models are top. It is best to choose a short model (less than 9 inches) that does not have a steep angle. You expect more speed and less seaweed gets caught in the Finn.

Mistral Honeycomb 9 „SUP Finn US Box
Sword:The sword shape is the uncompromising focus on straight-ahead driving. Along with that go losses in speed. For clean turns, you should shift your weight backwards. The sword is suitable for heavy paddlers who value the straight-ahead ride. However, I recommend a model with a flat angle, otherwise there will be so much seaweed hanging.

Siren SUP Race Finn
Middle
fin : This type of fins are very short. The short water cutting edge provides only a very low resistance, which is why – provided the right board – high speeds are achieved. These short fins are particularly suitable for long race or touring boards.

SUP Finnish Materials – Which are the best?

The material significantly influences the stability, robustness, durability and weight of your Finn. In my opinion, the weight for beginners and advanced stand up paddlers plays only a minor role. The few grams more or less under the board you will hardly feel in the water.

Unlike backpacks, belt bags and anchors, where weight really matters, you’d better pay attention to their ruggedness. Otherwise, an unfavorable lying stone, pretty much go into the money.

In any case, you do not need super-light, modern fins. I advise to materials such as carbon, nylon, fiberglass or hard plastic / PVC. Finns made of these materials have prevailed. Most popular sports models are made from one of these materials.

Honeycomb SUP fins can also be exciting. The very light models are robust but also flexible.

Fastening the SUP Fin – How to attach Finns correctly

Attaching a SUP fin is usually not a big effort. If you practice it may take 15 seconds to half a minute. It is nevertheless an annoying activity, which is why I briefly list the necessary steps here. Maybe I will spare you such a frustration.

Attach SUP fin in US box

  1. Place the thread of the fin through the wide recess in the fin carriage. First slide the tile into the front part.
  2. First forcefully insert the fin with the rear end into the fin carriage.
  3. Now fold the Finn down completely.
  4. Place the thread plate just below the mounting hole of the fin and screw in both.

If you’ve lost the screw, you’ll probably find my mini SUPF Bolts Guide helpful.

Conclusion

Finn is not Finn – that’s what I should have made clear. There are different models for the different requirements. So that you can find your way through the jungle of advantages and disadvantages, there is this little closing word.

  • Can you easily stand on the board, but your board is too slow for you? Try it with a short median fin.
  • Do you paddle long tours on which it is primarily straight and more stability you think is good? Then reach for the long sword fin.
  • Are you looking for a compromise or want to equip your first SUP board properly? Choose the allround fin with its dolphin shape.

SUP Double Stroke Pumps: Boost SUP Boards Twice as Fast?

SUP double stroke pumps

The best double-stroke pumps in comparison

You’re packing the SUP again? Quickly pack the SUP board, drive to the lake, unload SUP, pump up and off you go.

I do not want to question that inflatable SUP boards really add flexibility. Spontaneous trips are much easier if all your gear fits in a backpack.

Opposite stands the work of inflating. Of manufacturers often comes only the vague statement 5 to 10 minutes.

In theory that sounds very good. Only I lie more like the 10 minutes and that only if I pump almost continuously. Many people have reported that it takes even longer with the pump included with your iSUP.

Unclean gaskets, slipping pistons and non-ergonomic short handles make work difficult, time-consuming and a nice stopper before the tour.

For that reason, I quickly switched to a double-stroke pump. For iSUPs, only single-stroke pumps are often included. In which only air is pressed down into the board leg down pressing the piston. Double-stroke pumps, also known as SUP double-action pumps, force air into the board shell both when pulling up and down.

The result is no half as long inflation time. But especially in the beginning to about 8 to 10 PSI pump almost twice as fast air into the board. Then you can switch to single-stroke mode and continue to the desired level.

Below I will introduce my favorite double-stroke pumps, after which I will explain more generally what is the most efficient inflation strategy, what makes a good pump, if e-pumps are a worthwhile alternative and how to save time and energy pumping with a little trick each time ,

The short answer: The best double-stroke pumps

  1. Bravo SUP double stroke hand pump
  2. SUPwave® Air 7 SUP double stroke piston pump SUP, kite, dinghy and air mattress
  3. Explorer Green SUP Double Stroke Pump Hand Pump
  4. Brunelli HP2 Power double stroke SUP hand pump

If you liked this guide, you should definitely look at my articles on SUP trolleys and SUP boardbags .

Bravo SUP -4 double stroke hand pump

  • Compatible with all popular SUP boards
  • With pressure gauge
  • With switching function

The Bravo SUP double stroke pump already appears in the fourth version. There were even some things on the already good model „-3“ improved.

The Bravo pump actually has everything it needs: double lift function with the ability to switch, a pressure gauge and the standard connection for SUP boards. 99% of all SUP boards can be filled with air with this pump.

The Bravo SUP has also retraced top reviews on Amazon . Buyers report dramatic improvements to their standard single stroke pumps.

Conclusion: The Bravo is my favorite for my personal title best Doppelhubpumpe for SUP boards . In terms of price, the pump also moves in the frame.

SUPwave® Air 7 SUP double stroke piston pump SUP, kite, dinghy and air mattress

  • Compatible with all popular SUP boards
  • With pressure gauge
  • With switching function

The pump from SUPwave also does what it should. All types of inflatable watercraft can be filled with air with this pump.

The pressure gauge and the switching function make pumping even easier. With the right strategy, you can really save power.

Conclusion: The SUPwave double stroke pump is also a solid model. I also like that, in addition to the SUP connection each still an adapter for high-pressure valves (so-called bayonet), the Boston valve and pinch valves are included.

Explorer Green SUP Double Stroke Pump Hand Pump

  • Compatible with all popular SUP boards
  • With pressure gauge
  • With switching function

Well on the Explorer model I like the integrated foot. This makes a solid impression. Ultimately, Explorer bypasses exactly one common vulnerability. Plastic feet can wear out in the long run pretty well.

In addition, the piston of the Explorer double stroke pump is slightly narrower than the other featured products. This makes pumping easier.

In principle, there is a trade-off between smaller cylinders that save power but deliver less volume than large-cylinder pumps.

Conclusion: The pump of Explorer has all the necessary functions. If you want to take it easy while pumping up, you should probably choose this pump with its small piston volume.

Brunelli HP2 Power double stroke SUP hand pump

  • Compatible with all popular SUP boards
  • With pressure gauge

The Brunelli pump does not have a classic system of single-stroke and double-stroke pump, but two stages that work essentially the same way.

With level 1 you can get up to 15 PSI on your board. For more you have to choose the second level.

According to the manufacturer you can reach up to 26 PSI with this pump.

Conclusion: The pump by Brunelli is similar to the other pumps and makes a solid impression.

Excursus: The most efficient inflation strategy

With double-stroke pumps, you can almost always set a mode that turns the pumps into single-stroke models. From this variation, some resourceful Stand Up paddlers have developed their own techniques to pump up their boards as fast as possible while saving energy.

The ideal inflation technique looks like this:

  1. Use as much displacement as possible (double stroke pump) for the beginning. This serves to quickly get as much volume into the board as possible.
  2. At an air pressure of about 8 to 10 PSI you change to the setting for the single stroke pump.
  3. With short, fast pumping movements, you push a little more air into the SUP with every push, gradually increasing the air pressure. You can save strength by keeping your upper body straight and your arms and elbows extended. The power for the pumping movements comes all alone from the knees. Back and arms are so relieved and you have enough power for the upcoming tour.

Pumps as a warm-up?

One way to deal with the annoying inflating, it is simply the pumping as a warm-up for the same starting SUP tour notice. In a back-friendly pumping technique, which gets power especially from the legs, the arm and upper body muscles is well heated.

This is also true and good. But compared to single-stroke pumps, you can really save time by using a double-stroke pump.

Electric pumps: the alternative?

Electric pumps promise to be an alternative. These pumps are either powered directly by the car battery, the cigarette lighter or by external battery. Especially the latter option is quite expensive, because the batteries still have to be bought for high prices.

The other options – car battery and cigarette lighter – not only require you to go on tour by car, but also that you carry the puffed board from the parking lot to the water.

In my opinion , double stroke pumps are the golden mean when balancing the different types of pumps. Priced they are between the single-stroke pumps (free of charge) and the hundreds of euros expensive electric pumps.

The electric pumps are not really comfortable either. Ultimately, you end up with more (electrical) equipment that can break – and some pumps seem to be vulnerable.

Trick: Greasing helps

Greased pumps are not only lighter, they also have longer lifetimes.

How to proceed:

  • Unscrew the upper cylinder cover.
  • Pull the piston out.
  • Carry out a decent portion of bearing grease. ( See here on Amazon * )
